Choose the instrument or the input it needs

A speedometer, a speed sensor and an hour meter are separate types of component. Identify which one the work requires before ordering. For an original-equipment replacement, compare the exact vehicle application, instrument reference and connections. A display's appearance alone does not establish that it accepts the vehicle's signal.

Check functions and what is supplied

For a speedometer, check the stated display units and supported functions. For an hour meter, compare how it records running time, its power requirements and any reset function. Is a speed sensor supplied with a replacement speedometer?

Only if the supplied-parts list says so. Treat the display and sensor as separate purchases unless the exact reference expressly includes both.

Can I choose any speed sensor with the same connector?

No. Match the sensor's specified vehicle and system application, mounting and reference. A connector that looks the same does not confirm that the sensor provides the required signal.

Can an hour meter replace a speedometer?

An hour meter records running time; it is not a substitute for a speed display. Choose the instrument by the function needed, and check its stated method of recording hours rather than assuming every meter works the same way.

Does a failed display mean I need a new gauge?
