Identify the cylinder specification

Start with the full model, year, engine capacity and application notes. Confirm whether the engine retains its original cylinder specification or has been modified. Where standard, oversize or other bore options are stated, use the measurements and requirements agreed with your engine builder.

Check what accompanies the cylinder

Read the supplied-parts list for the exact reference. Do not assume that a cylinder includes a piston, rings or gaskets. Use pistons and rings and gaskets and seals to find separate components once you know what is required.

Can I choose a cylinder by engine capacity alone?

No. Match the exact application and stated specification, including any variant notes. Engine capacity and a similar-looking casting are not enough to establish the correct cylinder for the engine.

Will a cylinder kit include a matching piston?

Only the stated contents can confirm that. If a piston is included, check its specification and size alongside the cylinder details. If it is separate, have the required match confirmed before ordering either part.

Can I reuse the piston I already have?

Have your engine builder assess its condition and suitability for the proposed cylinder. Matching a vehicle model or nominal bore does not establish the required fit. This needs the relevant measurements and the component manufacturer's requirements.

Where should I look for a wider rebuild?

Use engine rebuild kits to compare kit contents with the whole job, or return to engine parts for individual components. Keep a parts list so that any piston, gasket or seal included with a kit is accounted for before ordering extras.
